Paulo Freire reflects on his life
Paulo Freire was interviewed by the International Literacy Institute in Philadelphia. This interview was done in 1996 by the World Conference Literacy. In this conversation he sates his opinion and way of thinking of a lot of things. He starts by saying that what calls the attention to him of being in the world, is that he is a curious being. He also states that in order to understand the others he must create in himself the virtue of tolerance, with this he can learn different things with different people, understand their point of views and more. Also he states that this virtue is a duty, by this he means we must all develop it to get through life. Another point he mentions was the critical understanding of education, how literacy is so important and how he has had a strong experience with the adult literacy. By literacy Paulo means analyzing, critical thinking, the ability to read and write and much more. A way to solve this is to propose a different way of teaching and thinking to the teachers, so they can work differently with the students. On the topic of language and power he says that it is impossible to think of language without thinking of ideology and power. He thinks it’s necessary for the teacher to be democratic and tolerant, to explain the students that their way of speaking is as beautiful as the others and that they have the right to speak like this. But he also states that for the students to have a voice in today’s world, they need to know the dominant syntax. Otherwise they would become the oppressed, the poor; the lacking of knowledge. In other words, the more you know the better. He concludes his interview by saying that he always changes; that in fact he changes every day, but one thing he never changed was the central nucleus of his thoughts.

What are universities for? from The School of life
The video that School of Life present and wee will talk about is "What are universities for?". The questions: "The universities teach us how to live?, Who we are?, Where our society should be headed?, and more are some of the concerns of the youth today. It have being establish some priorities for students to learn philosophy, history, sciences and other courses. Those are important, but what about life?We also should be studying what we like, what is the meaning of life, and how to live well, how to live happy. The School of life present the "Universities of the future"that consist in this kind of replacement. How should we be dealing with our problems, or how to reduce the anxiety, or how to be more compassionate are themes and areas that (maybe in a future) universities could fantasizes. Therefore as School of Life present the traditional way of teaching in the Universities since 19th century and their idea of what universities should be, makes us reflect about what universities really for and where is the happiness in our life.

Dear all,
Dr Papa and me have prepared a quiz on mastering genetics.
The quiz will be available from September 02, 2016 02:00pm until September 8, 2016 at 11:59pm
It is constituted of 40 questions, exercises and tutorials, and most of them are multiple choices.
Due to the fact that monday will not be lesson you will have the possibility to dedicate that time to solve the quiz and from martes to jueves you can require help from the tutors in the genetic center.
They are available for helping you BUT NOT TO SOLVE THE EXERCISES!
The REPASO will be on Friday 9th of September in CIENCIAS NATURALES Anfi 142 from 2.30 to 4.30 pm, in preparation to the EXAM1 (September14th)

Freire has a preoccupation of the way of thinking in the education. The things
we, the students, are given to learn are not putting our critical way of
thinking, by this means we are no analyzing, evaluating and expressing our self
and opinions. For this, he propose that the teachers and the students to have a
different way of thinking, different critically, so the teachers can teach
different with the students. Respecting and defending the way the teacher teach
and how the students learn, he thinks it’s important to be “democratic and
tolerant” by this he means taking for granted the opinions and point of view of
others and respecting that. From his curiosity, Freire has learn that in the
process of being curious there a moral excellence of being tolerant. By being
tolerant he understands and with understanding he learns different things from
different people. Curiosity is the force that moves him to keep learning until
the day he dies and to invest time on what calls your attention. Tolerance and
respect are the ingredients to work with others and learn from them.
Everyone has their right to
speak their opinions and way of thinking, how they express their opinions and
way of thinking is also a right. People have different ways of speaking and
talking and that is totally okay. There is no accent better or good than other
accents. “it is necessary to explain, to make clear to the kids or the adults
that their way of speaking is as beautiful as our way of speaking.” Says Freire
in the interview. By this he means that how someone speaks is no more of less
than how others speak.

Summary: Chapter 2 of Pedagogy of the Oppressed
Chapter 2 of Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire says that there is a major problem on the education system and it has been going on since 19th century. Freire central his point in the problem of banking and problem-posing. Teachers want students to come to class quiet and copy and learn everything that they are told to teach. The students are the bank and the teacher is the depositor. Students should not know more than what they are thought. They do not want students to exceed the limits, if they do, then they are a threat to the society. That is why Paulo wants the education system to be taught with problem-posing, because this challenges the student to think more and dialogue. It opens their minds. But this type of system is not beneficial to society because it makes them analyze their surroundings and question types of decisions made.
