Our Response to Reading and Videos

Education in the 21st Century

“Education in the 21st Century” is a video presented by the Smithsonian Student Travels that lets us know how education, technology, and life has evolved and created what is now the 21st century. The United States population in nearly the same amount of people that have been able to learn and speak the English language in China and there are more than 450,000 words in the English language. That is seven percent of what Shakespeare could’ve used in his time. This demonstrates the evolution of our knowledge and the way things expand itself throughout the whole entire world with technology. Many think China is what will take over and that is what has been taught and said because of the economic growth they have, but in reality India is expected to be the most populous nation by 2025 and one in four worlds workers will be Indians. Other than the growth in populations another thing that has been growing throughout the entire world is the control that technology has on us. The digital growth in the universe in the past five years has been by 1,000%. Technology isn’t only a personal daily use now, but it is also used and needed for education. Forty-six percent of teachers say their homework will require technology to be done and ninety-four percent of students say their homework requires technology. This is the information that demonstrates that us as human beings is this society not only use technology as an advancement, but depend on it to be able to keep moving forward. In the 21st century it isn’t and shouldn’t only be about teaching and learning technology, but by using it to create cultural awareness, creativity, problem solving, innovation, communication, and so on and so forth. All of these qualities are what help share, evolve, and make an advancement of our knowledge with others throughout the world. All of this information that has been shared with us through the video is what distinguishes the 21st century from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.

Universities Purpose

What are universities for? This a topic that The School of Life approaches in a youtube video. The School of Life is an organization devoted to developing emotional intelligence through the help of culture. This can be seen in the video because when they question the purpose of the universities the proposed new departments like one how to deal with relationships another one to deal with anxiety as well as others that don't make part of the university.  They argue that these are key to one's development as a human because the university is supposed to help you deal with all that life has to offer not just the professional aspect of it. According to The School of Life, the first universities were used for people to find meaning in life by learning about history and paintings instead of finding meaning in religion. Somewhere along the line that purpose of finding meaning in life went away and the goal was to educate one for the professional word, but what about the rest of the time when you are not working? Who will teach you to live? At first, that's what universities did but not anymore. As students who are still learning and developing we need that class to teach us how to deal with a breakup, teaches us how to make friends, teaches us how to do our taxes and deal with anxiety. The School of Life culminated their video saying that  “The universities of the future” will do that.

What Are Universities For?

The universities started showing up in the mid XIX century the same time where there was a great decrease in the power of religion. At the time many had questions about life and it's meaning, about themselves, they searched for wisdom. Not getting the answers they wanted, people sought for them in universities.

Universities where built to teach people how to make a living and give them "keys" to attain the job they want. People often hope that in the university they will finally get important answers to questions like: who thay are, where our society should be headed, how can they be happier and more fulfilled, certain things needed to truly have the life they want, not only the job they want. The video states that if you were to go to any university in the world and start making questions like: "where should I go with my life", "what is my purpose", "how can we change the horrible and wrong things with the world" You wont get an answer, they don't promote that type of thinking.  Thats why in What are universities for?the speaker proposes that future universities should change departments like philosophy for a department of relationships, death, anxiety management, and self-knowledge to reflect the actual priorities of our life so we can live happily, with a full potential, to maybe get to answer those important questions we've always had, and to truly understand ourselves and not only how to make money.
